Rye January

In this episode David and Eric share some of their favorite rye whiskeys, rye based cocktails and other ways to enjoy this under-appreciated spirit.

Manhattan
2oz (60ml) rye whiskey
1oz (30ml) sweet vermouth
2 dashes Angostura bitters
Maraschino Cherry
Stir ingredients in a mixing glass with ice. Strain into a chilled stemmed glass and garnish with a cherry.
Old Fashioned
¼oz (5ml) simple syrup or 1 sugar cube with splash of water
3 dashes of bitters
2oz (60ml) rye whiskey
Orange twist (optional garnish)
Add sugar, bitters into a mixing glass and stir for 60 seconds. Add ice and whiskey and stir until chilled. Strain into and rocks glass over a large cube of ice. Garnish with orange twist.
Sazerac
2½oz (75ml) rye whiskey
¼oz (5ml) simple syrup or 1 sugar cube with splash of water
4 dashes Peychaud’s bitters
Absinthe
Lemon peel for garnish
Rinse chilled glass with absinth and discard. Add ingredients to mixing glass, stir and strain into chilled, absinth rinsed glass. Garnish with lemon twist.
Vieux Carré
3/4oz (22ml) rye whiskey
3/4oz (22ml) cognac
3/4oz (22ml) sweet vermouth
2 tsp (10ml) Benedictine
4 dashes aromatic bitters
Maraschino cherry or lemon twist for garnish
Build in a glass and stir or add ingredients to mixing glass with ice, stir and strain into rocks glass with fresh ice. Garnish with cherry or twist.
New York Sour
2oz (60ml) rye whiskey
1oz (30ml) lemon juice
¾oz (22ml) simple syrup
½ oz (15ml) red wine
1 egg white
Combine whiskey, lemon juice, sugar and egg white in a cocktail shaker without ice. Dry shake for 30 seconds. Open and shake with ice until cold. Strain into a rocks glass with fresh ice and slowly float red wine on top of the drink.
